About event

Join us on April 11th at 19:30 at the magnificent Chester Cathedral for one of our most atmospheric programmes!

Soundtracks of the renowned film ’Interstellar,’ directed by Christopher Nolan, and brought to life by the enchanting performance from Mystery Ensemble.

Hans Zimmer is one of the most influential and celebrated film composers of our time, is an Academy Award winner, a two-time Golden Globe recipient, and a three-time Grammy winner. For this special performance, his iconic scores will be reimagined for an ensemble with organ, blending the grandeur of cinematic sound with the depth and resonance of the cathedral setting. This unique arrangement preserves the emotional power of Zimmer’s music while offering a rich, immersive acoustic experience.

For this special cathedral performance, the programme will combine instrumental ensemble, piano, and the majestic power of the organ, placing the organ at the heart of the musical experience. Zimmer’s compositions will be reimagined to honour their original grandeur while embracing the extraordinary acoustics of Chester Cathedral.

The fusion of strings, piano, and organ creates a powerful, immersive soundscape — echoing the cosmic scale and emotional intensity that define Interstellar. Within the soaring architecture of the Cathedral, the organ’s resonance adds a profound, almost celestial dimension to the music.

About venue

Chester Cathedral stands as one of the North West’s most magnificent historic landmarks, rising above the Roman city walls of Chester with timeless grandeur. Originally founded as a Benedictine abbey in 1092 and later elevated to cathedral status in the 16th century, the building is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, blending Norman foundations with soaring Gothic design.

Inside, the vast nave unfolds in warm red sandstone, illuminated by intricate stained glass and framed by elegant vaulted ceilings. The Cathedral’s famous medieval cloisters, among the finest in the country, add to the sense of tranquillity and historic depth that defines the space.

Renowned for its exceptional acoustics, Chester Cathedral provides a breathtaking setting for large-scale symphonic performances, sacred choral works, and intimate candlelit concerts alike. The resonance of the stone architecture creates clarity, warmth, and dramatic depth, allowing music to linger beautifully beneath the vaulted arches.

With a capacity of over 1,000 guests, the Cathedral offers both grandeur and intimacy — a space where history, architecture, and sound converge in one of England’s most atmospheric cities. Hosting a concert here is not merely an event; it is an experience shaped by centuries of heritage and artistic excellence.
