Carmina Burana by candlelight

Een intieme, koorgerichte explosie van noodlot, hartstocht en middeleeuwse poëzie — in de fantastisch sfeervolle O.L.V-Sint-Pieterskerk in het hart van Gent, op 23 januari om 20.00 uur. Voel het vuur van het lot en de polsslag van het menselijke verlangen in deze kamerversie van Carmina Burana van Carl Orff — tot leven gewekt onder leiding van de wereldberoemde dirigent Ralph Allwood MBE DMus.

In dit unieke concert ontmoet de dramatische kracht van Orffs muziek de kunst van het Allwood Choir — een elite-ensemble van bekroonde koorzangers, stuk voor stuk leden van enkele van de meest vooraanstaande vocale groepen in het VK — en dat alles omringd door honderden flakkerende kaarsen.

Deze exclusieve uitvoering biedt een zeldzame, intieme versie van een van de meest iconische werken van de 20e eeuw. Een gedurfde, lichamelijke cantate op dertiende-eeuwse teksten — deels heidens, deels sacraal, deels schalks — Carmina Burana spreekt over de eeuwige cycli van geluk, begeerte, liefde en verlies.

Gecomponeerd in 1935–1936 en gebaseerd op 24 gedichten uit de middeleeuwse Codex Buranus, transformeerde Orffs explosieve koorschrijfkunst deze oude verzen tot een van de meest herkenbare werken van de vorige eeuw, met als ouverture het donderende “O Fortuna”, een hymne aan de wreedheid en onvoorspelbaarheid van het lot.

Gevat in een dramatische proloog en epiloog die ons eraan herinneren: het rad van fortuin staat nooit stil.

Nieuw bewerkt op basis van oorspronkelijke manuscripten en speciaal voor deze ruimte gearrangeerd, biedt het programma een gedurfde, emotioneel geladen ervaring die de innerlijke intensiteit van Orffs visie onthult.

De organisatie is in handen van het creatieve bureau RED EVENTS & Distribution ltd, dat uitzonderlijke culturele evenementen organiseert op de meest diverse locaties, van oude herenhuizen, op daken, in kastelen en andere unieke locaties in Europa, Groot-Brittannië, Azerbeidzjan, Georgië en andere landen.

Feel the fire of fate and the pulse of human desire in this chamber performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana — brought to life under the direction of world-renowned conductor Ralph Allwood MBE DMus.

In this unique performance, the dramatic power of Orff’s music meets the artistry of the Allwood Choir — an elite ensemble of award-winning choral singers, each a member of some of the UK’s most distinguished vocal groups — all surrounded by hundreds of flickering candles.

This exclusive performance offers a rare and intimate version of one of the most iconic works of the 20th century. A daring, visceral cantata based on 13th-century texts — part pagan, part sacred, part scandalous — Carmina Burana speaks to the eternal cycles of luck, lust, love, and loss.

Composed in 1935–36 and based on 24 poems from the medievalCodex Buranus, Orff’s explosive choral writing transformed these ancient verses into one of the most iconic works of the 20th century, opening with the thunderous O Fortuna, a hymn to the cruelty and unpredictability of fate.

This concert follows the traditional three-part structure:

Framed by a dramatic prologue and epilogue that remind us: the wheel of fortune never stops turning.

Newly adapted from original manuscripts and arranged specifically for this space, the programme offers a bold and emotionally charged experience that reveals the inner intensity of Orff’s vision.
