Williams werkte intensief samen met legendarische regisseurs zoals Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Alfred Hitchcock, Oliver Stone en Chris Columbus. Hij componeerde ook de muziek voor de Olympische Zomerspelen van 1984, 1988 en 1996, en voor de Olympische Winterspelen van 2002. In de herfst van 2023 werd hij benoemd tot Ere-Ridder van het Verenigd Koninkrijk.
