Florence Looked Beyond the Stars: Interstellar Entered a New Dimension

On 25 July, we invited Florence to turn its gaze from the masterpieces of the past towards the mysteries of the universe as Interstellar: Tribute to Hans Zimmer by Mystery Ensemble made its city debut.

We presented the premiere inside the Cattedrale dell’Immagine, an ancient Romanesque church transformed into Italy’s first permanent centre for immersive digital art. Monumental projections, moving light and historic architecture converged around Hans Zimmer’s score, allowing sound and image to travel through the space as if the building itself had become part of the performance.

Mystery Ensemble, joined by soloist Lorenzo Fuoco, reimagined the music of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar through a combination of acoustic and electronic instruments. The result captured both sides of Zimmer’s musical universe: its vast, almost overwhelming scale and the deeply human emotions hidden within it.

In a city renowned for preserving beauty across centuries, we opened a window onto an imagined future. Interstellar did not simply arrive in Florence — for one evening, we transformed the Cattedrale dell’Immagine into an instrument, a spacecraft and a world beyond time.
