On 26 June, we presented The Music of the Lord of the Rings. Tribute to Howard Shore by Mystery Ensemble at Paulanerkirche in Vienna for the first time.
The church gave the programme a special kind of presence: not theatrical in the obvious sense, but deep, resonant and almost secretive — as if the music had discovered a hidden chamber inside the city. Howard Shore’s themes moved through the space with the weight of legend: the warmth of the Shire, the pull of the road, the shadow of danger, the quiet nobility of ancient worlds.
Performed by Mystery Ensemble, the concert turned Paulanerkirche into a place where Tolkien’s universe did not need scenery to appear. The sound was enough. A phrase, a pause, a familiar motif — and the audience was already somewhere far beyond Vienna, following a road that seemed to continue through stone, light and silence.
This first evening at Paulanerkirche became a striking new chapter for one of our most beloved programmes: atmospheric, intimate and full of that rare feeling that great stories can still find new places to live.
