Am 14. Februar um 19:00 Uhr findet in der historischen Wasserkirche im Herzen vo Züri, mitten in der Altstadt, es ganz bsunders Konzert statt. De Abig isch de Musik vo Ludovico Einaudi gwidmet und wird vom Ensemble Sinfonietta Bern gestaltet.

Im Januar 2022 hät Einaudi s Album „Underwater“ veröffentlicht – sis erschts Solo-Piano-Projekt sit über zwänzg Jahr. Entstande isch s Werk nach und nach während em Lockdown 2020, e Phase, wo Klang, Stimmung und Gedankewält vom Album massgeblich prägt hät.

Tag für Tag isch Einaudi ans Piano gsässe und hät d Idee frei und spontan la entstah. Über Monat hinweg sind alle paar Täg Melodie oder Motiv entstange – Skizze, wo sich spöter zu vollständige Kompositione entwickelt händ. Er beschreibt die Ziit als e paralleli, sehr introspektivi Welt, geprägt vo Stilli und Rückzug.

„Alles isch ganz natürlich passiert, wie nie zuvor. Ich han e Gfühl vo Freiheit gspürt, han d Regle losgloh, und d Musik isch anders gflosse. Es het kei Filter zwüsched mir und em Klang vom Piano geh – alles isch ehrlich gsi. De Titel ‘Underwater’ isch e Metapher für e flüssigi Dimension, losglöst vo dr Aussenwelt.“

D Musik vo „Underwater“ isch geprägt vo Rueh, Klarheit und feiner emotionaler Tiefe – vo dr Unschuld vo „Luminous“, über d liedhafte Schlichtheit vo „Temple White“, bis zur sanfte Tröstlichkeit vo „Indian Yellow“.

„D Musik hät sich aagfühlt, als chäm sie usere andere, ruige Welt, wo ich sehr gnossen han“, so Einaudi. „Im Alltag het mer meist z wenig Ziit zum würklich entschpanne. Während dr Isolation han ich frei und intensiv chöne experimentiere.“

De intime, gedämpfti Klang vom Album isch entstange, indem bi jedem Hammer vom Steinway-Piano no e Schicht Filz ergänzt worde isch – für e weicher, introspektivere Ton.

On 14 February at 19:00, a special concert will take place in the historic Wasserkirche in the heart of Zürich, one of the city’s most atmospheric sacred spaces, located in the heart of the Old Town. This evening is dedicated to the music of Ludovico Einaudi and will be performed by Ensemble Sinfonietta Bern.

In January 2022, Einaudi released the album “Underwater,” his first solo piano project in over twenty years. The album gradually took shape during the 2020 lockdown, a period that profoundly influenced its sound and philosophy.

Each day, Einaudi sat at the piano, allowing ideas to emerge freely and spontaneously. Over months of improvisation, melodies appeared every few days — sketches that later evolved into fully formed compositions. The composer described this time as a parallel, introspective dimension shaped by isolation and silence.

As Einaudi explains:

“Everything happened naturally, like never before. I felt a sense of freedom, discarded the rules, and the music flowed differently. There was no filter between me and the piano sounds; everything was genuine. The title ‘Underwater’ is a metaphor for a fluid dimension, untouched by the external world.”

He adds:

“When you swim underwater, silence feels different. Sounds — and everything else — are perceived differently.”

The music of “Underwater” is characterised by calm, clarity, and subtle emotional depth — from the innocence of “Luminous” and the song-like simplicity of “Temple White” to the gentle reassurance of “Indian Yellow.”

“The music seemed to come from another, tranquil world that I truly enjoyed,” Einaudi reflects. “Usually, there is not enough time to relax and enjoy life. During isolation, I was able to experiment freely and deeply.”

The album’s distinctive, intimate sound was achieved by placing an additional layer of felt on the piano hammers, creating a softer, more introspective tone.

Ludovico Einaudi is one of the most influential composers of contemporary neo-classical music. His deeply emotional, life-affirming melodies have received worldwide acclaim and have been featured in iconic films such as “The Intouchables,” “Nomadland” (Academy Award winner), Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan,” and Xavier Dolan’s “Mommy.”

Performed by Ensemble Sinfonietta Bern, this concert offers a refined chamber interpretation of Einaudi’s music, perfectly suited to the serene acoustics and spiritual atmosphere of the Wasserkirche.
